[XviD-devel] encoding blindly?

hey guys

I've been encoding a rather large amount of tv clips,
when i ran into a problem.. (i know i'm going to probably
get shot down for asking this, since its _not_ an xvid
specific problem)

basically, i ran into an mpeg (i'm presuming its mpeg,
based on the (wrong) facts that it has an mpg extention,
and that i cant find any other information..

i want to encode this dreaded video clip, but its way over
800 megs, i was wanting to have a nice 400 meg xvid
encoded version.. i've tried GSpot (no funny comments P),
it states that there is no codec that is identifiable..
virtualdub/cinemacraft.mpeg.encoder/lsx.mpeg.encoder.suite
TMPGEnc etc etc will not open the file, yet it plays
inside media player, (although the picture size looks
rather incorrect).. playing it through something like
powerdvd correctly displays the video though..

anyone have any ideas on how to go about converting
this video into something smaller using xvid? or any way
to get around it?

regards,
cami

ps, incase anyone is going to ask, the video clip i'm
trying to encode is "farscape.4x07.john.quixote.mpg"
