i haven't looked myself, but i remember gruel 
saying that greyscale mode didn't involve any 
memset trickery, it just skipped the chroma blocks 
during mbcoding.  thus greyscale mode will find 
different mvs depending on whether chroma me 
is set or not, since the chroma planes are still 
intact.
