there are basically two types of mpeg-4 bitstreams:

raw visual bitstreams: sometimes called .bits, .cmp, .m4v, .mp4v
ffmpeg, and mpeg4ip can play these
xvid deals only with raw bitstreams

mpeg-4 system streams: .mp4
a container format, which stores video, audio, etc. data
the mp4 format is almost identical to quicktime's .mov fileformat.
ffmpeg, mpeg4ip, mplayer(linux), quicktime, envivio can decode these

there are tools available at the mpeg4ip project
(http://sourceforge.net/projects/mpeg4ip) which can convert between
raw and mp4 streams.

i have not heard of "mp4u". maybe you mean mp4v?
