-I<include-path> is neccessary, because the makefiles dont recurse
into individual directories.
my test environments are as follows
djgpp, mingw, msvc6sp5 (k6-2/350)
slackware 3.4 (486dx4/100)
debian 2.2 (p4/1.6).
however, cvs refused to commit Makefile.linuxx86, so i posted the
$<D change instead.
