If Adobe Premiere compresses an AVI for you with the VFW of XviD, Adobe
Premiere does not have to be distributed under a free license.

4. You are not allowed to use XVID in proprietary applications.
GNU GPL does not give you the right to do that. Not to link against it,
not to dynamically load it at runtime. If you want to use XVID from any
application, commercial or not, it has be under a Free Software License!

That's the thing about GPL... otherwise you have to look for a LGPLed 
codec like ffmpeg.
