I can only talk for the windows platform, but my estimate is that about
60% is delivering as YUY2, 25% as RGB (mostly RGB32), 15% as YV12.
Avery's Virtual Dub does not support YV12 (or I420), and most packages
therefore deliver YUY2 through AviSynth. If Virtual Dub has to process
the video it is delivered as RGB32. I don't know any programs delivering
RGB16. 95% of all commercial packages deliver only as RGB24/32.

I assume you use yv12 -> yv12 is some cases, as VFW only delivers video
as 4-byte aligned video (for luma plane, 2-byte for chroma planes) - I
know XviD has some conversion problems if stride is not mod 8, but it
seems more related to the conversion routines.

Btw.

is there any software out there which uses other colorspaces than
I420(YV12) or RGB24/16 for _input_ material?

And does windows decoding (video player) include a step like
yv12_to_yv12
or is the image directly overlayed from internal buffers (as MPlayer
does
using CSP_USER)?
