You did not, but I did when writing the mencoder plugin.

Basically,  packed   is  a  flag   and  can't  be  turned   off  putting
packed=0. It's just a pity mencoder option parser doesn't allow that...
Maybe CVS  versions support no$flag to  turn off options ?  or else edit
the source, it's not very complicated, locate
static int xvidenc_packed = 1; and put there a 0.
