   i've added an integer version of gaussian filtering, for comparison's sake.
   It's disabled by default, but you can #define USE_INT_GAUSSIAN. Rather
   untested...

   Note: the original paper mentions using a 11x11 filter instead of 8x8
   (11 ~= 8.sqrt(2)).
